Placement Haematology
Year F1

Main Duties of Placement

General medical care of patients with haematological disease – principally malignancy – in a senior led unit.

There are two main haematology wards with a smaller number of outliers in the Oncology department. 

Jobs include ward rounds, ward jobs, clerking elective patients, reviewing patients, ordering and discussing investigations. 

There is always support from other resident doctors including F2-IMY1, StRs, as well as regular consultant input.

Additional evening cover of the general medical wards is also required 1 to 2 times per week and at weekends.

Typical Work Pattern

Shift patterns on the haematology ward are 8.30 to 5pm Monday to Friday, with general medical cover per rota.

Learning Opportunities

Continuous ward based teaching, assistance with procedures including lumbar punctures, bone marrows. 

Involvement in transfusion process, managing haematological emergencies and how central venous catheters are managed. 

Learning on palliative care and ethical issues around medicine.

Teaching

Mandatory F1 teaching per the South-East teaching programme.

Weekly consultant led teaching.

Opportunity to teach medical students on daily ward rounds and weekly bedside teaching alongside a consultant.
