Main Duties of Placement | Mostly on-call, carrying admission bleep after 2pm and discussing/assessing referrals from A&E/GPs/ward doctors. Also occasional O/P clinics and theatre when possible. |
Typical Work Pattern | Largely on-call/nights i.e. 12 hour shifts interspersed with 8-5 in St John’s Hospital. |
Learning Opportunities | Theatre. Presenting at M&M. Good exposure to decision making at appropriate level, with support from registrar/SNP/consultant. Strong academic focus, opportunities for audits/research projects. |
Teaching | Departmental teaching program led by the senior registrars. Supported to attend formal FY2 teaching by handing over bleep to Surgical Nurse Practitioner. Informal teaching during ward rounds, M&M Wednesday morning, X-ray meeting Friday afternoon. |
Unique Selling Points | Being responsible for carrying the admission bleep means close interaction with your team and good opportunities to follow patients from the admission to theatre. Great job if you are interested in surgery as a career. Continuity of patient care allows for more in-depth understanding of surgical pathologies. Consultant led ward rounds 7/7. |
