| Main Duties of Placement | Time divided between Neonatal Intensive Care (ward round, jobs, emergency bleep carrier, practical procedures, supporting handover). High Dependency/Special Care (discharge planning, routine attendance at deliveries, leading handover at start and end of the shift) and post-natal wards (routine examination of the new born, assessment and initial management of sick babies, phlebotomy, arranging appropriate follow-up). |
| Typical Work Pattern | Frequent blocks of nights and long days (12.5 hrs) for NICU and HDU/SCBU. Short days (9 hrs) for Acute shift and post-natal wards. Approximately 1 in 3-4 weekends. |
| Learning Opportunities | Frequent consultant-led teaching; daily morning teaching, weekly journal club, weekly grand-round and weekly SIM. Learning opportunities and good senior supervision in daily running of the unit, including opportunities for practical procedures. This department has a relatively academic focus with an emphasis on teaching. |
