| Main Duties of Placement | Daily ward rounds on the Children's Ward and Special Care Baby Unit. Assessment, diagnosis and management of GP and A+E paediatric referrals. On-call bleep holder taking referrals/advice calls from GPs/A+E/Community Midwives/Health Visitors etc. New-born baby examination and review in post-natal ward. Review of patients in the Planned Investigation Unit. Paediatric phlebotomy, cannulation. Assisting with paediatric/neonatal resuscitation. |
| Typical Work Pattern | Day shift 8am-4pm. Late shift 12-8pm. Night shift 8pm-8am. Weekend shift 8am-8pm. |
| Learning Opportunities | Ward-based teaching during ward rounds and review of patients in the assessment bay, often directly from the consultant. Attendance at out-patient clinics in General and Specialty Paediatrics. |
| Teaching | FY2 teaching one hour once per week (mandatory). Paediatric teaching once per week. |
