Main Duties of Placement | The Hospital at Home service aims to deliver the type of acute care that is usually only possible in hospital. The aim is to keep frail, vulnerable, older people at home to avoid all the possible complications associated with hospital admission. The role of the FY2 doctor is to help with initial assessments of patients at home; to review all blood/investigation results, to formulate treatment plans for patients and attend twice weekly consultant ward rounds plus occasionally lead unsupervised virtual ward rounds. Typical common conditions we deal with include infections (UTI, chest, cellulitis), delirium, falls, COPD, heart failure and dehydration. However there can be a great variety of presentations. FY2s are attached to Victoria Hospital, Kirkcaldy but will rotate during their attachment. |
Typical Work Pattern | The daytime duties are Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm. On-call work is within medical admissions unit, one evening per week and one weekend day per month. |
Learning Opportunities | Ward rounds several times per week, 2 of which will be with a consultant; often 1:1 direct supervision with the consultant. Opportunities to see own patients in day hospital clinics. |
