Main Duties of Placement | Microbiology (RIE) – 8 weeks Assisting Team to assess ward referrals and during the ITU ward round. Taking part in an audit. Infectious Diseases (WGH) – 8 weeks Ward work, ward rounds, admitting emergency cases with established or possible infection. |
Typical Work Pattern | Micro: 9am-5pm plus HAN shifts (9pm-9am). ID: 1 in 5 evenings and weekends, plus HAN (usually 2 sets of 4 nights over 4 months). Shifts 8am-4pm, 9am-5pm, 9am-9pm, HAN shifts |
Learning Opportunities | Micro: Lots of one-to-one teaching plus weekly group tutorials and journal club. ID: Ward based teaching, vibrant education programme, consultant led unit. Several small group tutorials and a departmental tutorial once per week. |
Teaching | As above, plus monthly foundation teaching afternoons, grand rounds (Weds), microbiology/radiology meeting (Thurs), unit educational meeting/lunch (Fri). |
Unique Selling Points | Micro: Excellent introduction to a pathology-based discipline with close liaison with clinical teams. Trainees will also develop confidence in using antimicrobials appropriately which is a useful skill in any speciality with a high infection load. ID: Excellent clinical cases and signs. Consultant led with daily consultant rounds, small friendly unit, opportunity to see HIV, tropical and community acquired infection. |
