Individual Placement Description
Placement Breast Surgery with Oncology (Acute Medicine on-call)
Year F1
Region South-East
Hospital(s) Western General Hospital, Edinburgh
Main Duties of Placement

Breast Surgery:

  • Pre- and Post-operative care and management of complications.
  • Pre-op assessment clinics. 
  • Assisting in theatre in various procedures for patients with benign and malignant breast disease. 

 

Oncology: 

  • In-patient care of patients with cancer and its complications (including oncological emergencies) in conjunction with team of ward-based doctors and ANPs. 

Medical Admissions Unit

  • evenings and weekends
Typical Work Pattern

Regular day: 8-4pm. 

Out of hours based in Medical Admissions Unit – evenings 17.30 to 21.30 & 1 in 4 weekends 09.00 – 21.30 

No Nights. 

Learning Opportunities

Regular opportunities for ward-based teaching with registrars. 

 

Teaching

Departmental internal junior doctor teaching programme 1 hour per week.

Hospital FY1 teaching programme 1 hour per week.

Unique Selling Points

Experience in looking after patients with benign and malignant breast disease 

Assisting in breast surgical theatre. 

Feel part of the ECC team whilst looking after patients in breast surgery and oncology. 

Medicine on-call as part of supportive team and seeing some patients with cancer and its complications admitted via MAU as well as those with general medical conditions.
