Placement General (Internal) Medicine and Gastroenterology
Year F1
Region South-East
Hospital(s) Western General Hospital, Edinburgh
Main Duties of Placement

General medical care of patients on a busy GI unit, covering 1 ward during the day.

Additional evening cover of the general medical wards is also required 1 to 2 times per week and at weekends.

Jobs include ward jobs, ward rounds, clerking elective patients, reviewing patients, ordering and discussing investigations. 

Typical Work Pattern

Shift patterns on the rota are 8-3pm, 10-6pm and 10-9.30pm.

Weekends 9-9.30pm on a Saturday and Sunday; you will typically do three weekends in the four month post.

Learning Opportunities

There are monthly morbidity and mortality meetings which you are encouraged to attend.

You are also expected to present a case at one of these meetings.

Teaching

Mandatory FY1 teaching is on a Thursday.

There are student teaching ward rounds for third year students on which the FY1 usually is in attendance.

Unique Selling Points

If you like doing practical procedures then this job gives you the opportunity to learn how to do paracentesis drains.

You will also have the opportunity to teach third year students once a week.
