Placement General Surgery
Year F1
Region South-East
Hospital(s) Borders General Hospital, Melrose
Main Duties of Placement

Consultant-led ward rounds every morning. 

Day to day running of surgical ward and dealing with deteriorating and acutely unwell patients under senior supervision 

Discharge and admission of patients 

Pre-assessment clinic. 

Two weekend shifts. 

Seven days with Hospital at Night. 

Typical Work Pattern

On call: 8am-4:30pm. 

On call late: 2pm-10pm. 

Ward: 8am-6:30pm. 

Pre-assessment clinic (includes jobs on ward in between patients): 8am-4:30pm. 

7 nights with Hospital at Night. 

Learning Opportunities

FY1 tutorials every Thursday. Surgery grand ward round on Wednesday morning. Medical grand rounds at Tuesday lunchtime. Medical X-ray meeting Friday lunchtime. Voluntary participating in theatre sessions gaining practical surgical skills. Regular lectures by senior members of surgical teams.  

Teaching

Mandatory FY1 tutorials every Thursday.

Unique Selling Points

Working directly with consultants, working in a team with the other FY1s. In absence of formal medical referral, FY1s have quite a big role in looking after non-surgical patient issues so good 
experience.
