Placement Liaison Psychiatry
Year F1
Region South-East
Hospital(s) St Johns Hospital, Livingston
Main Duties of Placement

Assessment and supervised management of adult patients within the acute hospital where there are psychiatric needs. 

The clinical work is highly varied and no two days are the same.

You will be working as part of a multidisciplinary team with consultants, specialist nurses and an FY1.

You will gain experience in risk management, identification of mental disorder, adjustment to illness, addictions, and knowledge of mental health legislation.  

Typical Work Pattern

Regular day 9am-5pm.Late shift 9am-9pm. 

2 1/3 weekends per rotation. 

Approximately 10 late shifts per rotation. 

Two sets of weekend and weekday nights as part of the medical HAN team. 

Provision of on-call/ward cover to facilitate annual leave. 

Learning Opportunities

Once weekly supervision to discuss and facilitate attainment of training competencies with allocated supervisor. 

Daily supervision of clinical work. 

Weekly multidisciplinary meetings. 

Opportunities for research and audit.  

Opportunities to observe in other services including ECT, IPCU, addictions 

Teaching

Hospital FY1 teaching programme 1 hour per week. 

Weekly mental health services educational meetingswith opportunity for junior presentations.

This post allows you to develop skills applicable to all branches of medicine whilst being supported at all times by a team of experienced psychiatric staff members. 

This is an excellent opportunity to learn to assess and manage the mental health of medically and surgically ill patients. In addition, there is the opportunity to be part of a specialist regional liaison service in burns and plastic surgery.
