Placement Paediatrics and Neonatal Medicine
Year F2

Hospital(s) Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh
Main Duties of Placement

Time divided between Neonatal Intensive Care (ward round, jobs, emergency bleep carrier, practical procedures, supporting handover).

High Dependency/Special Care (discharge planning, routine attendance at deliveries, leading handover at start and end of the shift) and post-natal wards (routine examination of the new born, assessment and initial management of sick babies, phlebotomy, arranging appropriate follow-up).

Typical Work Pattern

Frequent blocks of nights and long days (12.5 hrs) for NICU and HDU/SCBU.

Short days (9 hrs) for Acute shift and post-natal wards. 

Approximately 1 in 3-4 weekends.

Learning Opportunities

Frequent consultant-led teaching; daily morning teaching, weekly journal club, weekly grand-round and weekly SIM. 

Learning opportunities and good senior supervision in daily running of the unit, including opportunities for practical procedures. 

This department has a relatively academic focus with an emphasis on teaching.

Teaching

Hospital based FY2 teaching once a week.
