| Main Duties of Placement | Care of critically ill adults (level 2 and 3 care) in a busy, combined high dependency and intensive care unit. Involved in ward rounds and subsequent ward care, plus assessment and resuscitation of acutely sick patients. Rotation to preoperative assessment for two weeks, several days in radiology and opportunity for theatre work and taster week. |
| Typical Work Pattern | Extended daytime shift pattern and working two in five weekends. |
| Learning Opportunities | Plentiful ward-based teaching, critical care tutorials weekly, access to online modules and in-house study days. Many opportunities to develop practical skills in all aspects of care. Weekly M&M meetings. |
| Teaching | Hospital teaching; one hour bleep free per week. Regular anaesthetic department educational meetings. Access to hospital “Grand Rounds”. Critical care tutorial weekly. |
| Unique Selling Points | Supervised closely by consultant staff with regular speciality and AHP multidisciplinary working. Possible to achieve most FY competencies during this rotation, plus additional practical procedures if desired. Excellent experience in recognising and managing acutely unwell patients. |
