| Main Duties of Placement | Approximately 80% of time is spent in the critical care unit looking after ICU and HDU patients and 20% of time is spent in theatre learning core anaesthetic and airway skills. |
| Typical Work Pattern | Full day shift pattern Monday to Friday with 2 full weeks in critical care and 1 shorter week in theatre. 1 weekend in 3 on call day shift cover in critical care. No overnight work at present. This is subject to review at regular intervals. |
| Learning Opportunities | Ward-based MDTM. ICU teaching. FY1 teaching programme. One-to-one supervision and teaching at bedside. Supervised assessment of critically ill patients in wards and AE. Cardiac arrest team. Learn invasive procedures from the experts. Develop core airway skills. |
| Teaching | All teaching opportunities are page free. Mandatory hospital wide FY1 teaching (1 hour). Weekly critical care teaching programme (2 hours). One-on-one consultant teaching in theatre. |
| Unique Selling Points | The breadth of activities that takes place in critical care and theatre means almost all elements of the foundation curriculum are encountered. Learn how to manage the sick patient’s airway and then care for them in critical care. Consultant and/or senior trainee supervision at all times. |
