Main Duties of Placement
|
- Care of children and neonates within Paediatric Critical Care. This includes patients after general surgical and surgical specialty procedures, and also medical paediatric patients requiring high dependency or intensive care.
- Duties include ward round and patient management responsibility.
- Admissions and discharges.
- As part of this rotation trainees may undertake spells within other paediatric subspecialties (particularly paediatric surgery) to ensure a holistic exposure and maximum educational opportunities.

Typical Work Pattern
|
- Full shift pattern, this may include night shifts to provide cover for emergency admissions.
- Hospital at night team available on-site.
|
Learning Opportunities
|
- Daily multidisciplinary teaching ward-rounds.
- Due to high consultant /senior presence, there is ample opportunities for opportunistic learning.
- Real time feedback on acute cases seen.
- Medical procedures.
- Weekly journal clubs, radiology meeting, complex nutrition meeting, palliative care meetings, and ID/microbiology meetings.
- Regular mortality and morbidity meetings, and critical incident meetings.
- Plentiful, dedicated teaching in addition to active hospital CME programme.
- Most trainees undertake and present projects during this placement.

Teaching
|
- Mandatory weekly FY1 teaching.
- Bleep free teaching 2-hrs a week, with other potential opportunities.
- Opportunity to attend general paediatric teaching on a Friday AM.
