Placement Emergency Medicine

Main Duties of Placement
  • 4-month rotation based in the Emergency Department of UHH involving assessment and management of acute minor and major presentations to the Emergency Department
  • Assisted decision making regarding treatment and management of patients
Typical Work Pattern

Current working pattern - 9am-5pm week days, a 3-week rolling pattern of days and then backshifts until 8pm, 1 weekend in 3 (day shift only)

Learning Opportunities
  • Consultant shop floor presence 08.00 - 23.00 seven days a week. There is a consultant resident on-call Monday to Thursday 23.00-08.00, providing direct patient supervision and teaching
  • Exposure to all areas of ED including paediatrics, minor injuries, majors and resus
  • Opportunity for involvement in Quality Improvement in the department
  • Opportunities to learn how to do practical procedures
  • You are expected to attend teaching sessions with 2 hours of protected teaching per week as noted below
  • On-site library facilities available 24/7
  • Excellent computer access for e-learning and online modules
Teaching
  • Formal 2-hour ED teaching Thursday afternoons (protected teaching time)
  • Dedicated FY1 teaching on Tuesday lunchtimes (protected teaching time) following the foundation curriculum
