| Main Duties of Placement | Based on a busy respiratory ward (Ward 17) with 3 Consultants carrying out ward rounds approximately 3 times a week. Opportunities to present patients and construct your own management plans. Ward 19 is also a busy ward dealing with gastroenterology. Infectious Diseases (Ward 2) involves an array of general medical conditions as well as specialised conditions: TB, syphilis, heart failure, cellulitis, gastroenteritis etc. In general, on each ward you organise the prescription of fluids, antibiotics and carry out cannulation, venepuncture etc. Care of the Elderly (COTE) encompasses a broad spectrum of medical conditions. One week you attend the post-take receiving ward then you work with the COTE team on their post-take ward round. The final week in ERU is an excellent opportunity to clerk-in patients and present them to Consultants. |
| Typical Work Pattern | Days are usually 9 to 5 depending on on-call shifts. Weekends are either 9 to 9 both days or 9 to 1. The hours during the 3 week ERU rotation (based on medical receiving ward round, COTE or clerking in patients) vary each week. |

| Unique Selling Points | Able to carry out procedures such as pleural taps, ascitic taps, lumbar punctures. A great place for perfecting lumbar punctures. Consultants are keen for you to be involved in patient care & encourage independent thinking about management plans. You are encouraged to speak with families which makes this placement great for perfecting your communication skills Holidays are delegated in 2 week blocks. The rota for bank holidays is made up between the F1s. Having a junior doctors' room is a great bonus. The library is accessible at all times with free printing facilities.
