Main Duties of Placement

The post would split equally between Orthopaedic and Emergency Medicine.

Standard days in acute orthopaedics and contribute to the oncall rota with ED. Whilst in Orthopaedic they would be based in the acute assessment areas and have opportunities to shadow the oncall team and experience other areas of orthopaedics at request.

The main aim of acute orthopaedic assessment areas is to improve orthopaedic patient flow within NHS Lanarkshire, by providing a safe environment for clinicians to see, assess and treat a select group of orthopaedic trauma patients.

The F1 will work with an MDT team reviewing acute admissions.

Orthopaedics vet referrals from the following sources:

(1) Primary care

(3) A&E majors

Acute orthopaedic assessment areas are staffed by the orthopaedic oncall team. This consists of an Orthopaedic consultant, middle grade and junior orthopaedic doctors, experienced orthopaedic staff nurses, fracture clinic practitioners and trauma liaison nursing staff.

We envision an F1 gaining exceptional educational experience in this areas under full supervision. They will see and examine a range of patients with fractures, joint infection, back pain and wounds. The would observe and practice essential clinical skills such as venepuncture, joint and neurological examinations, joint aspirations, wound care and suturing, manipulations of fracture and applications of plaster casts. The will be supervised in all their decision making and prescribing as required for F1 level.

We have a large pro-active experienced consultant and junior staff group that would welcome and F1 to the team. There would be additional opportunities to gain experience on audit and research as well as plenty of teaching opportunities during the 4-month placement.

They will also have time in ED for half the placement, including covering ED OOH including LDs, weekends and backshifts.

Excellent learning opportunity to experience emergency medicine and acute orthopaedic presentations early in their career.

Good exposure to a broad range of patients and presentations

Robust teaching programs in place in both departments and access to the NHSL wide teaching programme for foundation

Unique Selling Points

F1s are not commonly placed in T & O and we believe this split with ED will be an exciting training opportunity for doctors considering a career in these specialties.
