Main Duties of Placement | As part of the pathology trainee team, to be involved in specimen dissection and description, to write some basic pathology reports on surgical specimens and to assist with autopsies. Introduction to specimen dissection, microscopy, cytology (optional). Participation in acute medical receiving at Glasgow Royal Infirmary (4-5 weeks). |
Typical Work Pattern | 9am-5pm daily Monday - Friday when on main base. Attachment to 3-4 surgical pathology specialties for 1 month each. You may also be involved in Acute Medical Receiving at GRI. Shift as per rota when on acute receiving. Post includes on call working. |

Teaching | Involvement in CBL undergraduate teaching will be expected. Involvement in trainee teaching sessions will be encouraged. Participate in ST teaching (Wednesday afternoons during term). |
Unique Selling Points | This placement is an opportunity to experience first hand the daily work of histopathology trainees and consultants in Britain's largest and busiest histopathology department. FY2s will become involved in dissection, reporting and autopsy work and, with senior staff, observe (at MDTs) the pathologist's role in the clinical-pathological team. This placement constitutes an ideal opportunity for aspiring pathologists to gain valuable experience in preparation for application for an ST post in histopathology. It also provides an excellent basis for those intending to pursue a career in surgery, radiology or oncology to develop an understanding of tumour classification, staging and pathology reporting and to obtain practical anatomical experience through exposure to a broad range of surgical specimens as well as gaining understanding of how the pathology component of the MDT operates. Exposure to laboratory medicine and interface with other specialties (radiology, oncology, surgery) at MDTs across a range of disciplines. Work with combined medical and scientist staff.
