| Main Duties of Placement
|
- Take part in daily ward rounds in the critical care floor including both intensive care and high dependency.
- Work with the MDT to ensure smooth running of the floor.
|
| Typical Work Pattern
|
- Rota combined with two FY1s
- Three week rolling cycle with two weeks on ICU and one on HDU
- ICU week 8:00 till 16:30 (Mon-Fri)
- HDU week 08:00 till 08:00 (Tues-Thurs – 3 days)
- Weekends one in three 08:00 till 16:30
- No overnight shifts
- Pro-rata leave entitlement

| Learning Opportunities
|
- Attendance encouraged at the weekly team meeting which covers M&M, QI, audit, journal clubs, case presentations and may include invited speakers
- Frequent impromptu bedside teaching
- Option to spend some time in theatre to gain airway skills
- Opportunity to join trainee ACCP teaching
- Working alongside trainees from numerous backgrounds on critical care placements

| Teaching
|
- Weekly trainee doctor teaching as part of a 12–week rolling programme of topics including in-situ simulation
|
| Unique Selling Points
|
- Consultant-led induction at start of block
- At all times working under the direct supervision of consultants (and senior trainees in ICU)
- The management of sick and deteriorating patients
- The management of varied and complex post-op patients including principles and practice of pain relief
- Join senior trainees on cardiac arrest and trauma calls
- Observe and then perform new clinical skills such as arterial and central lines
- To be involved in complex MDT discussions including those relating to end of life care
- To be involved in patient and family communication
- Active participation in QI, audit and research projects with our hospital award-winning team
