Main Duties of Placement | FY2 will rotate around various areas within the 65 bedded renal unit (Ward 4A – high acuity, 4D – general nephrology, 4C renal transplant surgery, renal day area/assessment unit). Ward rounds with consultant three times per week. Assessing patients with renal disease who attend our OP assessment area. Outpatient clinics in Stobhill or NVH ACH in blocks. Cover for the outpatient QEUH dialysis unit. FY2 will be supported by renal registrar and nurse practitioner on ward. There is an opportunity for this post to be entirely renal medicine, entirely transplant surgery, or a mixture of both. The renal unit functions as one large team with a mixture of medical and surgical activities. |
Typical Work Pattern | 1 in 8 junior tier renal medicine rota full shift. Senior tier cover from registrar and consultants. Renal FY2 is a member of HAN team. |
Learning Opportunities | Consultant teaching ward rounds three times per week. Weekly transplant journal club. Monthly renal unit CME Friday afternoons. Monthly renal unit pathology CPC meeting and monthly M&M meeting. |
Teaching | Weekly dedicated junior tier renal teaching by consultant every Wednesday at 3pm. Feedback is positive. Central line insertion course for each 4 month block. |
Unique Selling Points | Hands on, enthusiastic, consultant team who do three ward rounds per week and see all new patients within 12-24h. Two consultants doing weekend ward rounds. Very friendly team and lots of supervision by registrars on ward. Team handovers at 9am and 4.45pm are well attended by all medics on ward. FY2 encouraged to do audit and present at unit meeting. Feedback very positive from recent trainees. Excellent post for gaining core foundation competencies and procedural skills. |
