Placement Palliative Medicine

Hospital(s) St Andrew's Hospice, Airdrie
Main Duties of Placement

Review of in-patients in hospice with complex symptom control issues

Clerking in new admissions to IPU

Discussions with patients and carers regarding management plans, prognosis and future care planning

Physical care of patients on ward including venepuncture, IV cannulation, ascitic drainage, NG tube insertion, PICC line care

Excellent communication with other disciplines within the hospice MDT and attending MDT meetings

Completing accurate referral and discharge letters for patients

Typical Work Pattern

Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm

Participation in non-resident on call rota (currently 1:5 frequency)

Learning Opportunities

Weekly journal club

Twice weekly consultant led ward rounds

MDT meeting with input from whole team (nursing, PT, OT, social work, chaplaincy)

Informal feedback following consultant review of new admissions

Lots of opportunity to complete Work Place Based Assessments

Teaching

Full induction programme including tutorials on symptom control and end of life care

Informal teaching on a daily basis from consultant led team and supportive group of specialty doctors

Unique Selling Points

Intensive exposure to palliative and end of life care will give the doctor an experience and confidence in dealing with death and dying in any future career within medicine. 

 

This post can support 2 hours per week self-development time and participation in Quality Improvement projects within the service would be expected.

There may also be the opportunity to contribute to Governance and Teaching.
