Main Duties of Placement | You will be reviewing patients based in your team and will attend your consultant ward rounds. Depending on the number of doctors in the speciality the number of patients you are expected to see can vary widely. When on receiving duties in the Medical Assessment Unit your main duty is to see as many patients as possible that are referred from A&E or directly from GP practices. When the ward-based FY1 is on receiving or on annual leave there is no replacement. This can increase your workload substantially as it falls to you to undertake the ward round and perform the FY1 duties. Expect to go home late on these days! Opportunities for practical procedures vary widely depending on the speciality and/or available patients. Depending on experience you will be expected to routinely carry out these procedural skills. |
Typical Work Pattern | Mainly 9 am to 5 pm when on the main General Medicine wards. You work as "first-on" (receiving Medical patients from A&E and GP referrals) every fourth weekend, and are "first-on" for a stint of 3-5 weeks in which you work a mixture of days (8 am to 5 pm), lates (2 pm to midnight or 3 pm to midnight), and nights (11.30pm to 9am). |
Learning Opportunities | Depending on the specialty, you have varied exposure to a mixture of practical procedures. Main duties are ward rounds, either alone or Consultant-led. There are several clinics which you are available to attend, depending on need and/or want. If you undertake Cardiology, you will experience several weeks on the Coronary Care Unit. During Receiving weeks, you will have time to review patients in High Dependency Unit, Renal High Dependency, and Coronary Care Unit. |
Teaching | Consultant-led teaching on a weekly basis with lunch usually provided. Teaching lasts one hour. Opportunity to present case studies and ECG teaching. Opportunity for specific ICU, Radiology and Renal teaching. The FY1 trainees have well-organised "bleep-free" teaching once every week with lunch provided. |
