| Main Duties of Placement | Geriatrics provides a wide variety on a day to day basis, as trainees are responsible for all their patients and their individual needs. The first half of the four-month block in Geriatrics is spent in Geriatric Rehabilitation at Ayrshire Central Hospital, and the second half in Acute Geriatrics within University Hospital Crosshouse. |
| Typical Work Pattern | A typical week is 9 am to 5 pm when based in the Geriatric wards; on-call shifts are different, including night shift. |
| Learning Opportunities | The trainee works closely with their allocated Consultant and has the opportunity to carry out their own ward rounds as well as Consultant-led ward rounds. |
| Teaching | Geriatrics Department lunchtime education meetings twice per week, which involve Consultant teaching and also give the trainee the opportunity to present either case discussions or audits. |
| Unique Selling Points | Geriatrics is a great job as there is a wide variety involved, both in acute presentations and the care that they require throughout their admission. It gives the trainee the opportunity to treat patients with diverse medical conditions, whilst exploring social situations and can ultimately be a very satisfying job. |
