Placement General (Internal) Medicine
Year F2

Hospital(s) University Hospital Hairmyres, East Kilbride, South Lanarkshire
Main Duties of Placement

· You will rotate through a combination of AMRU, CCU, Medical HDU, Stroke Unit and general medical wards with subspeciality of respiratory, diabetes and endocrinology, gastroenterology, cardiology.

· You will be ward-based and gain experience in the management of patients under your care.

· Duties include participation in ward rounds, organising relevant investigations, making appropriate referrals and discharge planning and communicating with relatives and GPs.

· You will be part of the cardiac arrest team when on call.

· Acute Assessment of emergency medical admission during receiving block.

Typical Work Pattern

· 12 doctors on Rota.

· 4 week receiving blocks (includes 1 week of night shift).

· Ward-based 9am to 5pm and evening shift about 1 in 10.

Learning Opportunities

· Ward-based teaching on ward rounds and at MDT for each specialty.

· Opportunity to attend clinics for training.

· Opportunity to carry out audit and do presentations.

· Opportunity to attend specialty sessions (endoscopy/echo etc.).

Teaching

· Postgraduate Medical Education.

· Meetings on Wednesday lunchtime (Protected teaching time).

· Weekly departmental meetings (for case presentations, audit, journal club, mortality & morbidity, specialty quiz) on Thursday lunch time for General Medicine and Friday lunch time for Care of the Elderly.

· Clinical skills training week.
