Placement General Surgery
Year F2
Region West
Hospital(s) University Hospital Hairmyres, East Kilbride, South Lanarkshire
Main Duties of Placement

· Rotation through wards for acute surgical receiving, general surgery and colorectal surgery.

· Participation in:

o daily ward rounds.

o outpatient clinics (two per week).

o theatre sessions (at least one per week).

o on call (assessment of new admissions and referrals).

o administrative duties (discharge summaries).

Typical Work Pattern

· Full shift rota compliant at Band 1A.

· Combination of 8am to 4pm and night shift.

· Excellent opportunities at clinic and in theatre.

· Opportunity for audit.

Teaching

· Weekly surgical meeting on Monday lunchtime.

· Monthly Morbidity and mortality meetings.

· Postgraduate Medical Education meetings on Wednesday lunchtime (Protected teaching time).

Unique Selling Points

· Direct supervision by Consultants.

· Own minor ops list at least once per month.
