Individual Placement Description
Placement Geriatric Medicine
Year F2
Region West
Hospital(s) University Hospital Hairmyres, East Kilbride, South Lanarkshire
Main Duties of Placement

Based in an acute or rehabilitation Care of the Elderly ward in University Hospital Hairmyres.

Work as part of a team with daily consultant ward rounds and regular MDT meetings. Opportunity to:

1. Attend general Care of the Elderly or specialist clinics e.g. movement disorder, falls, fast-track TIA.

2. Learn about community services e.g.

  • "Hospital at Home" team for their morning "virtual" ward round and home visits in the afternoon with one of the consultants or senior practitioners.
  • "Frailty at the Front Door" team
Typical Work Pattern

17 week rolling rota with rotational commitment to acute medical receiving and the Hospital at Night team.

Learning Opportunities
  • MDT working and planning complex discharges.
  • Daily consultant ward rounds with ward based teaching and opportunities to participate in audit/quality improvement work.
  • Opportunities to attend clinics and home visits with the Hospital at Home team.
  • Participation in Departmental M&M meetings.
Teaching
  • Hospital grand round – Wednesday lunchtime
  • Medical departmental teaching – Thursday lunchtime
  • COTE departmental teaching – Friday lunchtime
  • QI Friday – Friday lunchtime
Unique Selling Points
  • Well-supervised posts with excellent senior support under direct Consultant supervision
  • Experience of working closely within a multidisciplinary team
  • Close involvement in the care of older patients, who are often frail with multiple complex issues.
