Placement Plastic Surgery

Main Duties of Placement

The Plastic Surgery Unit is a tertiary referral centre.

Duties include receiving plastic surgical emergency patients (soft tissue/bone injuries +/- vascular compromise, burns), caring for patients undergoing major reconstructive procedures for cancers and functional problems of the head and neck, breast, skin, limbs and GU tract, assessing and treating acutely unwell or post-op patients in the wards and HDU

Typical Work Pattern

Full shift pattern for on-call with both day and night shifts.

The FY2 is rotated through ward cover, theatre and outpatient sessions as well as trauma receiving.

Learning Opportunities

Formal hospital teaching session for FY2 doctors; 

see above regarding specialty meetings as well as mortality monthly and hospital meetings.

Wide access to internet and therefore e-learning.

Busy post with many opportunities to learn during clinical care.

Teaching

All teams are involved in research and audit.

There is a plastic surgical mortality/ morbidity/audit/journal club meeting monthly to which the FY2s are expected to contribute and a hospital meeting weekly.

A dedicated FY2 level teaching program is delivered weekly.

FY2s are welcome to attend ST training sessions.

All trainees are welcome in theatre to learn suturing and soft tissue handling skills.

Unique Selling Points

All trainees are closely supervised.

Emergency receiving is consultant-led, with senior trainees working a shift pattern and actively involved in patient care.

Tertiary patient referrals to this centre provide a unique learning opportunity.
