Main Duties of Placement

Psychiatry is a community specialty with inpatient wards in UHH OR UHW where the on calls are based. We currently offer a wide range of community placements in Psychiatry including Old Age, General Adult, addictions and forensic psychiatry. Whilst on call you will gain experience in the assessment and management of acute psychiatric presentations in a wide variety of age groups from CAMHS, working adults and older adults

Typical Work Pattern

9-5 Monday to Friday-see timetable below Primarily 9-5 apart from late shifts and weeks of nights On-calls Hairmyres or Wishaw depending on community placement: 1 in 11/1 in 12 this is Psychiatry only rota is EWTD/7day working compliant, with Band 7 ANP buddy and second on call Consultant support, as well as PLNS service. We say at induction we are happy to be called, we expect to be called, and are happy to come in if we need to. Any medical issues get escalated within Hairmyres.

Learning Opportunities

We pride ourselves on prioritising training and education. Our posts offer 1 to 1 apprenticeship based teaching with Consultant supervisor, weekly hour of protected supervision. As well as our regular teaching programme you can attend our weekly Balint group. We have a chief registrar who helps junior trainees with QIA.

Teaching

We pride ourselves on prioritising training and education. You will be able to attend your mandatory FY2 training days, clinical skills and simulation. In addition we have local Internal teaching alternate Thursdays morning with GP and Core trainees, including M&M meetings, journal clubs and case presentations. You will also attend specific Fy2 teaching at the GTG in Glasgow Due to the nature of our posts you will also receive informal teaching from your Consultant and your team.

Unique Selling Points

If you have a special interest in a specific subspecialty please let us know ideally three months before changeover and we will try to accommodate you. We only have one addictions post and one Forensic post. All our posts are mapped to the Foundation curriculum and we have a Foundation Champion to support who works with one of our Consultant’s Dr Carlin who is an FPD.
