Placement Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery

Main Duties of Placement

Busy university teaching hospital with acute trauma receiving and full range of elective orthopaedics.

Assess and admit acute trauma patients.

Ward care of trauma and elective ortho patients alongside seven specialist nurse practitioners.

Option to attend outpatient clinics/theatres.

Typical Work Pattern

Full shift EWTD compliant.

Weekdays 0800-1700.

3-4 consecutive nights as part of Hospital at Night team.

Learning Opportunities

Significant clinical exposure to all aspects of orthopaedic trauma and elective patients with Generic Hospital FY2 teaching course.

Regular in-house clinical teaching sessions.

Bi-monthly audit meetings and quarterly mortality/morbidity meetings.

Teaching

Consultants work in speciality teams covering all sub-specialites.

Most teams do 1-2 ward rounds daily.

Daily consultant-led teaching trauma meetings.

Established induction programme.

Unique Selling Points

Significant tertiary referral practice including pelvic reconstruction, revision hip/knee surgery, spine, complex shoulder/elbow trauma, hand surgery, ilizarov limb reconstruction and musculo-skeletal oncology surgery.
