Main Duties of Placement

The focus of the placement is on gaining exposure to the specialty through activities in the outpatient clinics, theatre and assisting the FY1 doctors on the ward when necessary.

The trainee is also responsible for organising and managing the teaching schedule for medical students.

On calls take place on the general surgery wards and involve clerking in patients on the receiving wards as well as supporting the downstream wards.

Typical Work Pattern

Regular days are 8am – 5pm. During on calls the trainee covers the general surgery receiving wards from 8am – 9pm and 8pm – 9am on night shifts.

Learning Opportunities

Numerous opportunities to take part in outpatient clinics, theatre, and endoscopic procedures such as flexible cystoscopies.

The trainee has the chance to develop and improve teaching skills by organising activities for the medical students and supervising their learning.

Exposure to acute cases by clerking in patients on general surgery receiving wards during on calls and opportunity to assist urology registrar during their on calls.

Teaching

Weekly stone and oncology MDT. Weekly general surgery teaching.
