Speciality: Intensive Care Medicine
Training in ICM in the East of Scotland programme is based mainly in Ninewells Hospital Dundee, with attachments to other major Scottish Teaching Hospitals. The programme is flexible to accommodate the needs and interests of the successful candidate(s) resulting in the required experience to obtain a CCT in ICM.
The Intensive Care Unit in Ninewells provides wide clinical experience in all aspects of general intensive care along with limited exposure to selected paediatric cases. The case mix of patients includes medical, surgical, trauma and neurosurgery. This reflects the breadth of clinical activity in Ninewells Hospital, providing all specialties on one site except for cardiothoracic surgery. Ninewells Hospital is one of 4 major trauma centres in Scotland. This post provides the opportunity to become proficient in all aspects of care of the critically ill including invasive monitoring, advanced ventilatory support, renal replacement therapy, ECHO and chest ultrasound.
Subspecialty interests and requirements of the trainee not provided in Tayside will be accommodated out with the Deanery by agreed placement in GMC approved centres. The cardiothoracic block will be delivered in the Golden Jubilee National Hospital, Glasgow and the Paediatric ICU will be in the Royal Hospital for Children and Young People, Edinburgh
The Intensive Care unit in Ninewells has close links with the University of Dundee, and the academic department of Anaesthesia. There are multiple opportunities to participate in both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and to develop a wide variety of teaching skills throughout all stages of training. The unit has a strong track record for participation in multi-centre research and ICM trainees can gain experience in most aspects of multi centre research. We have our own Quality improvement programme and are committed to ensuring that trainees have an opportunity to participate in QI projects.
The East of Scotland Deanery is in Tayside, which is a beautiful area to live and work within. It has varied geography and offers diverse interests for individuals and families, from a thriving city life in Dundee to outdoor activities in Angus, Perthshire and North Fife.
