The training experience gained in ICM in the East of Scotland programme is based mainly in Ninewells Hospital in Dundee, with attachments to other major Scottish Teaching Hospitals. The programme is flexible to accommodate the needs and interests of the successful candidate(s) resulting in the required experience to obtain a CCT in ICM.

The Intensive Care Unit in Ninewells provides wide clinical experience in all aspects of general intensive care along with limited exposure to selected paediatric cases. The case mix of patients includes medical, surgical & trauma including those with traumatic brain injury. This reflects the breadth of clinical activity in Ninewells Hospital, providing all specialties on one site except for cardiothoracic surgery. Ninewells Hospital is one of 4 major trauma centres in Scotland. This post provides the opportunity to become proficient in all aspects of care of the critically ill including invasive monitoring, renal replacement therapy, ECHO and a variety of ventilatory support modes.

Academic links with the University of Dundee provide scope for research projects and teaching

Subspecialty interests and requirements of the trainee not provided in Tayside will be accommodated out with the Deanery by agreed placement in GMC approved centres.

The East of Scotland Deanery is in Tayside, which is a beautiful area to live and work within. It has varied geography and offers diverse interests for individuals and families, from a thriving city life in Dundee to outdoor activities in Angus, Perthshire and North Fife. It has good road and rail networks to the other areas of Scotland. The quality of life in Tayside is excellent with affordable housing, easy access to beautiful countryside for sport and leisure. There is easy access to a wide variety of outdoor pursuits including hillwalking, watersports and skiing as well as world-renowned facilities for golf.

Training within the Deanery is trainee focused with attention to individual trainee needs and aspirations.

Research, audit, teaching and management opportunities

The Intensive Care unit in Ninewells has close links with the University of Dundee, and the academic department of Anaesthesia. There are multiple opportunities to participate in undergraduate teaching and training and to trained to provide mastery learning for both undergraduates and postgraduates in various medical specialties. The unit has a strong track record for participation in Multi centre research and ICM trainees can gain experience in most aspects of multi centre research. We have our own Quality improvement programme and are committed to a ensuring that trainees have an opportunity to participate in QI projects.

Where is the training delivered?
Training is delivered across:

Golden Jubilee National Hospital, Clydebank, Ninewells Hospital, Dundee, Royal Hospital for Children and Young People, 50 Little France Crescent, Edinburgh, EH16 4SF

Training is predominantly delivered in Ninewells Hospital with rotations to Edinburgh for paediatrics and the Golden Jubilee Hospital (Glasgow) for cardiothoracics. Training within the East of Scotland is trainee focused with attention to individual trainee needs and aspirations and several bespoke training attachments have been supported to support an individual's areas of special interest.
