Scottish Medical Training

Scotland - the home of medical excellence

Speciality: Acute Internal Medicine

Programme Description
GMC Reference: NOS2022

Come and join the UK's most satisfied Acute Medicine Trainees, according to the latest GMC Trainee Survey.  Our Acute Internal Medicine (AIM) training posts include a joint CCT with General Internal Medicine (GIM), following a 5 year programme.  Experience is based in the acute medicine department at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, with time spent in a District General Hospital (usually Raigmore, Inverness, but other options might be available), Medical High Dependency, Intensive Care Medicine, Respiratory Medicine, Cardiology and Acute Geriatrics.

Further information about the programme and departments is available at our website: www.aberdeenacutemedicine.wordpress.com

As part of the AIM curriculum you will be required to obtain a specialist skill.  We have teamed up with the University of Aberdeen to offer those interested in Medical Education the chance to spend a day a week with the University, conducting and organising undergraduate teaching, course design and assessment, throughout the whole 5 years of training.

If you would prefer to obtain specialist skills in point-of-care ultrasound we have Scotland's only FAMUS accredited ultrasound supervisor, who will train you to undertake POC ultrasound of the abdomen, chest and vascular systems, and also offer the opportunity to obtain Focussed Intensive Care Echocardiography (FICE) accreditation, with additional time spent in critical care to achieve this (more details on the website www.aberdeenacutemedicine.wordpress.com/specialistskills).

Acute medicine at Aberdeen is provided solely by our team of 14 acute medicine consultants through three main areas: Acute Medicine Initial Assessment Ward (40 admissions/day), a large Short Stay Medical Ward (30 beds), and a separately staffed Ambulatory Emergency Care Centre (20 attendances/day).

Our service is consultant led, with 5 consultants on shift at peak times, and a large group of Advanced Nurse Practitioners who see, assess and discharge patients as well as performing extended roles such as lumbar puncture and OPAT, which helps share the service provision load to provide space for our registrars to focus on their learning and develop.  There is 15 hours a month of bleep free teaching, including one day a month dedicated to simulation training and education.

Research, audit, teaching and management opportunities

Our unit has a culture of quality improvement, which is strongly supported by our local management teams.  We routinely collect data on our performance, and have a good track record for presenting at national and international conferences.  Our trainees are expected to participate in this.

Those with an interest in medical education can spend a day a week working with the University of Aberdeen, and will receive a discount to complete a Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Education (see the website for more details www.aberdeenacutemedicine.wordpress.com/specialistskills).
