Placement Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery
Year F2
Region East
Hospital(s) Ninewells Hospital, Dundee
Main Duties of Placement
  • Ward duties (bloods, trauma patient clerking, ward rounds, post op reviews, prescribing)
  • Surgical experience in Trauma theatre
  • Support FY1s and ANPs
  • Trauma receiving on call sessions (with Reg support)
  • Hands on experience of fracture management
  • Experience in Clinics
  • Major Trauma Sessions covering Major Trauma Ward and Attending Major Trauma calls in ED with senior presence
Typical Work Pattern

Standard days, long days, weekend long days, night duties in PRI.

Part of rota including elective unit at Perth Royal Infirmary. 

Learning Opportunities
  • Daily Trauma theatre lists
  • Attend daily Fracture and Ortho clinics
  • Consultant Teaching on ward rounds, clinics and theatre
  • Major Trauma Consultant Teaching, learn secondary survey.
  • Attend regional PG Teaching
  • Direct senior supervision/teaching whilst on call 
Teaching
  • Regular Centralised Orthopaedic Departmental Teaching
  • Attend Daily Trauma meetings whilst in Ninewells
  • Postgraduate Deanery Teaching with cross cover of wards
Unique Selling Points

  • Good exposure to trauma and elective theatres and clinics
  • Supervise and teach FY1s on ward -leadership opportunity
