Main Duties of Placement

Assessing and managing patients with a range of presentations including medical, surgical, trauma, and minor injuries. FY2 doctors are expected to assess patients, develop a plan, discuss patients with registrars and consultants, and implement appropriate management (including treatment, referral to appropriate specialties, discharge).

Typical Work Pattern

Rolling rota of day (07.45-18.00), back (12.00-22.00), late (17.30-02.00) and night (22.00-08.00) shifts, including working roughly 2/3 weekends.

Learning Opportunities

Handover sessions are used not only to handover the patients in the department but also as ad hoc teaching opportunties.

There are regular opportunities for learning through discussing patients with seniors, assisting in resus situations etc.

Teaching

Hospital FY2 teaching session 1 hour per week.

Deaprtmental teaching one Wednesday morning each month, approximately 4 hours.

Medical staff are divided into teams, which promotes learning by creating an environment in which juniors are encouraged to ask questions and seek support. This also fosters a welcoming social environment. Overall it is an exciting and fast-paced job with a huge variety of pathologies and presentations, as well as opportunities to develop practical skills.
