In this job you will be the only FY2 working alongside CT1-CT2 trainees on an equal rota.

Your main duty is holding the on-call bleep, either on long shift or at night.

During this you will take referrals from A&E, GPs, other wards in the hospital including Paediatric and other local hospitals.

You are also the first point of call for the FY1 ward doctors. When you are on day shift you will be assisting in theatre, helping in outpatient clinics and on occasion performing local anaesthetic day case procedures.

Your ward commitment is much less than the FY1 doctors but if you are quiet you may help on ward rounds or review patients highlighted by the FY1 doctors.

When on call at weekends and night you will also be covering for ENT. This sounds daunting initially but there is always a registrar on call if advice is required and you quickly learn the basics.

Regular morbidity and mortality meetings with case-based discussion.

Registrars always keen to teach when on call with you; seeing patients together and assisting in theatre.

For anybody surgically inclined this is a fantastic FY2 job. It teaches you a range of surgical skills, wound management and tissue handling techniques.

For those not surgically inclined it promotes many qualities of any doctor including time-management, communication within a team and dealing with referrals between specialities.

The unit is very friendly and senior staff with quickly get to you know making it easy to integrate into this busy but very rewarding speciality.
