Placement Acute Internal Medicine
Year F2

Main Duties of Placement

As an FY2 you are based in the acute admissions unit, seeing GP referrals to Medicine and initiating appropriate management.

There are also 2-3 weeks during the job spent on the General Medicine wards.

The majority of time is spent in the Medical Assessment Unit 'Trolleys' area (similar in some ways to an Emergency Department).

This involves seeing referrals from Primary Care with medical presentations plus some 999 referals and initiating appropriate management.

The nursing, medical and AHP teams in MAU trolleys work very closely and there is direct supervision from a ‘Medical Registrar’ at all times and a Medical Consultant until 8pm daily.

There is also a commitment to downstream medical patients on the general medical wards.

This involvesdaily review and management of these patients and close working within a multidisciplinary team.

Typical Work Pattern

The majority of shifts are 12-8, 2-9.30 or 3.30-11, with some night shifts and some 9-5 or 12.30-9.30 shifts on the General Medicine wards.

Varies between 9.00 -1800, 12.00 - 20.00, 1400 - 21.30, 5.30 - 23.00, 1700-0100 with hospital at night shifts of 21.00 - 09.00 and weekend shifts of 9.00-21.00.

Learning Opportunities

Weekly FY2 teaching and weekly departmental teaching, which is a good opportunity to present audits or research. 

As well as weekly F2 teaching there is dedicated departmental teaching for doctors in training and weekly departmental meetings attended by the whole unit.

There is plenty of opportunity for involvement in quality improvement and clinical audit work.

Teaching

Hospital FY2 teaching for 1 hour a week, and departmental teaching for 1 hour a week.

Hospital F2 teaching 1 hour per week.

DiT departmental teaching 45mins per week

Unit departmental meetings 1 hour per week.

Unique Selling Points

Working very closely with registrars and consultants in a well-supported environment.

There is a lot of scope to learn and perform practical procedures.
