Individual Placement Description
Placement Gastroenterology
Year F2
Region South-East
Hospital(s) Western General Hospital, Edinburgh
Main Duties of Placement

Your role is to assist the on-call registrar in the running of the two inpatient wards (22 beds), review of referrals and assessment of acute admissions in ARU. An important part of your role involves leading the two FY1s and the nursing staff who are ward-based.

You are also expected to hold the on-call registrar bleep on a Wednesday (with support) and do a Thursday afternoon clinic. Overall the job allows a good level of responsibility.

Typical Work Pattern

9am to 5pm. 9am to 9.30am every two weeks where the evening is spent clerking in ARU for general medicine. 4 weekends on ARU per rotation.

Learning Opportunities

You are expected to attend all departmental meetings every week. One X-ray meeting, one inflammatory bowel disease MDT each week and one M+M each month. Both holding the on call registrar bleep and Thursday afternoon clinic are exceptional learning experiences that are well supported. FY2 teaching is of good quality and happens reliably every Tuesday.

Teaching

20 third year medical students are based on the ward and you are expected to teach them regularly (once every couple of weeks).

Unique Selling Points

Overall an excellent job. Running your own ward rounds, managing your own referrals, making advanced management and investigation decisions, close relationships with the consultants, lots of practical procedures, ARU work, your own clinic and population of outpatients to look after. All unique selling points.

It is important to note that this description is a typical example of your placement and may be subject to change.
