Placement Old Age Psychiatry
Year F2

Main Duties of Placement

Care of older people aged over 65 years with often co-morbid physical and psychiatric presentations. This involves inpatients, attending ward rounds, handover meetings, discharge planning meetings, outpatient clinics. Dictation of admission summaries, discharge letters and outpatient cases.

 

One session per week medical cover for IHTT East Lothian sector.

Typical Work Pattern

Monday-Friday 9am-5pm plus long days (to 9pm) and blocks of night and weekend duties. All on call work is within psychiatric services. You will be expected to travel between sites and travel expenses can be claimed.

 

Learning Opportunities

Regular opportunities for ward-based and outpatient teaching.

Learning experience dealing with carers, multidisciplinary and voluntary agencies in the context of those with organic and functional psychiatric illness.

Option to attend weekly psychiatry wide case conference, special lectures every two weeks.

Teaching

Weekly Foundation Teaching Programme in Psychiatry, Balint Group and drop-in sessions.

Monthly regional FY2 teaching programme which takes place at the Western General Hospital

Unique Selling Points

One-to-one working with a consultant in a busy service with a varied Psychiatric experience including domiciliary visits, outpatient and intensive home treatment team work.
