Placement Gastroenterology/Liver Transplant Medicine

Main Duties of Placement

The job involves 1 month on transplant and 3 months on GI.

Transplant:

There is no F1 so some of the duties are traditional F1 duties such as doing discharge letters. However there are ANPs based in the transplant unit who assist with F1 type tasks. Cover is also provided to ward 215 (transplant HDU).

 

GI:

There is the opportunity to do independent ward rounds as well as ward rounds with more senior team members. There are multiple opportunities to insert ascitic drains and do ascitic taps. 

Typical Work Pattern

Monday to Friday 9am-5pm with some weekday blocks of long (12 hour) days.

Weekend cover to the GI ward is provided approximately 4 times over the 4 month placement.

On a weekend, cover also extends to the renal and liver transplant patients.

Learning Opportunities

Pathology meeting - Monday lunchtime.

Unit meeting - Tuesday lunchtime

GI radiology meeting -Wednesday lunchtime.

Journal club - Thursday lunchtime

Transplant assessment meeting - Friday afternoon (transplant block)

Teaching

Hospital F2 teaching programme 1 hour per week (Thursday).

GI teaching on a Tuesday lunchtime and Thursday lunchtime.

Unique Selling Points

Highlights include opportunities to undertake frequent paracentesis.

Although the transplant section is very busy it is very interesting and educational.
