Placement Renal Medicine

Main Duties of Placement

Mostly ward rounds and ward work. The job rotates between acute and chronic teams. On the acute team, ward rounds are mostly led by a senior team member but on the chronic team there are opportunities to do some ward rounds independently and attend some outpatient clinics. Cover for the dialysis unit is provided during blocks on the chronic team.

Typical Work Pattern

Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm plus week-long blocks of late shifts till 9.15pm with 4 weekends on call during the placement. One weekend is a HAN weekend while the other 3 involve providing cover on the renal ward.

Learning Opportunities

Foundation doctors report very good learning opportunities. There is a unit MDT on Wednesday for the chronic patients with organised audit groups and a monthly renal Morbidity and Mortality meeting on a Thursday.

Teaching

There is renal teaching for junior doctors on Wednesday lunchtimes.

Hospital F2 teaching programme 1 hour per week (Thursday).

Unique Selling Points

Consultants and registrars are very keen to teach. This is a very well supported job. There are ample opportunities to do procedures such as central lines.
