Placement General Surgery
Year F1
Region West
Hospital(s) Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary
Main Duties of Placement

Responsible for the day to day care of ward and surgical inpatients.

Attending daily ward rounds.

Rotate through Surgical Receiving.

Rotate through orthopaedics.

Typical Work Pattern

Day, late and night shifts.

Cross cover for acute surgical admissions.

Hospital at Night team on-site.

Learning Opportunities

Hospital and departmental induction.

Dedicated, protected weekly foundation teaching.

Weekly journal club, grand rounds and lunchtime meetings as part of hospital CME programmed.

Ample opportunity to undertake audit with presentation at audit and research evenings.

Teaching

Mandatory bleep-free FY1 teaching for 1 or 2 hours each week (lunchtime Tuesday and/or Thursday) and opportunity to attend general teaching on a Friday morning.
