Placement Intensive Care Medicine
Year F1
Region West
Hospital(s) Royal Alexandra Hospital, Paisley
Main Duties of Placement
  • Supervised assessment of the critically ill patient
  • Admission & discharge of critically unwell patients
  • Ward round daily review of patients with MDT
  • Keeping medical records, supervised prescribing on electronic patient record
  • Practical procedures such as invasive line placements
  • Organising investigations and treatments with supporting specialties
  • Instigating MDT management plans
  • Handover to downstream specialties at discharge

Teaching
  • Weekly Departmental Teaching
  • Weekly ICM Teaching Programme
  • Monthly Journal Club (in conjunction with anaesthetic department)
  • Monthly West of Scotland Critical Care Teaching *(second Wednesday)
  • X2 FICE mentors and x1 CUSIC Mentor
  • In house courses available: Central Venous Cannulation, Tracheostomy Safety, ALS (quarterly), APLS (annually)

  • Direct consultant supervision in the assessment and management of the critically ill patients, opportunity to achieve core clinical competencies and learn unique clinical skills such as invasive line placements.
  • Point of Care Ultrasound Expertise in Unit – Qualified FICE & CUSIC Mentors
  • Quality Improvement with at least 3- 4 abstracts submitted each year to national /international meetings– 2 SPSP fellows, Professor of Care Improvement
