Main Duties of Placement

Assessing acute minor and major presentations to the ED, in adult and paediatric patients. Assisted decision making regarding treatment and disposition, i.e. admission or discharge.

Typical Work Pattern

9-5 or 12-8 shifts. No nightshifts unless by mutual agreement. 1:5 weekends.

Learning Opportunities

Consultant shop floor presence 8am – 11pm Mon-Thu and 8am – midnight Fri-Sun providing direct patient supervision and teaching. ST4+ support at all other times. Exposure to all areas of the ED including paediatrics, minor injuries, majors and resus. Lots of opportunities for involvement in Quality Improvement and to present work.

Teaching

Comprehensive departmental induction.

Weekly in house teaching programme.

Other teaching events including child protection meetings, radiology and weekly ‘One Minute Wonder’ topics.
