Placement General (Internal) Medicine
Year F1

Hospital(s) University Hospital Crosshouse, Kilmarnock, Ayrshire
Main Duties of Placement

Team-based patient cover with care and management of patients allocated under your medical specialty which includes cardiology, renal, respiratory, gastroenterology and infectious diseases.

All posts rotate through the Acute Medical Unit.

Typical Work Pattern

Full shift, including night shifts, with cross cover with AMAU.

Learning Opportunities

Consultants are keen to teach during ward rounds. CME programme every Friday lunchtime which includes presentations and teaching from other specialties.

Teaching

The FY1 trainees have well-organised "bleep-free" teaching once every week.

Consultant-led teaching on a weekly basis with lunch usually provided. Teaching lasts one hour. Opportunity to present case studies and ECG teaching. Opportunity for specific ICU, Radiology and Renal teaching.

There are hospital postgraduate meetings at least monthly.

Unique Selling Points

Excellent senior support with lots of opportunities for core and more advanced procedures, e.g. ascitic drainage, lumbar puncture. Good training ground for trainees interested in general medicine or GP.
