You will have your own surgeries and consult in parallel with a GP principal. Some posts are linked with psychiatry and involve one day per week working closely with a Consultant Psychiatrist in the Community Resource centre. You may be expected to do house calls when you and your trainer feel you are competent to do so.

1 session (4 hours) per week will be protected time for education. During this there will be tutorials and small group sessions. Some practices have journal clubs and problem-based learning groups. Additionally, there is the opportunity for liaison with community-based providers, e.g. Mental Health teams, which can provide learning opportunities particularly if posts are linked with the Community resource Centre

There are practice meetings (clinical and managerial) which you will be expected to attend. You will gain experience in team working with the wider Primary Care team which may include Practice Nurses and ANPs, District Nurses, Health Visitors, Midwives, Pharmacists, Mental Health Workers, Health Care Assistants etc.

You will have 0.5 sessions (2 hours) of self-development time. This time can be used for working on your eportfolio, preparing for specialty application and future career, for preparing teaching materials for others, or other development needs you determine with your Educational Supervisor.

Feedback from trainees has been extremely positive to date. The responsibility for continuing care of patients and for improving decision making is particularly valued, as are the close team working and individual supervision by senior colleagues which trainees enjoy.

Trainee who are not intending to enter GP as a career find the placements give a valuable insight into the demands of general practice and trainees intending to enter GP as a career feel they are better prepared for GPST following a Foundation GP placement.
