Placement Intensive Care Medicine

Main Duties of Placement

Admission and discharge of patients from 20 bed mixed medical and surgical ICU. 

Tertiary referral centre for pancreatic surgery, major burn injury and complex cancers.

Opportunity for supervised assessment of emergency ICU referrals from the wards and emergency department.

Multidisciplinary ward rounds daily.

Providing continuity for patient management and liaising with surgical and other referring teams.

Keeping good quality records and ensuring that patient orientated quality improvement projects are progressed.

Typical Work Pattern

Three shifts:

Days 0800-2030

Nights 2000-0830

Short Days 0800-1630 (used for clinical work on ICU as well as opportunity to get involved with anaesthetic work in theatre, acute pain rounds and ICU INSPIRE follow-up clinic).

Learning Opportunities

Teaching on ward round.

Real time feedback on acute cases seen.

Medical procedures including airway management and siting invasive lines.

Weekly Wednesday morning simulation teaching and afternoon tutorial teaching.

Tuesday afternoons: Critical Care grand round, quality improvement programme review, education slot (delivered by ICU consultant or visiting specialist) and M&M review.

Teaching

1 hour weekly hospital FY1 teaching.

1 hour weekly hospital grand round.

Access to ICU Teams Teaching Channel with variety of resources.

Wednesday simulation (AM) and tutorial (PM) teaching.

Unique Selling Points

Assessment and management of critically ill and highly dependent patients under direct consultant supervision.

Plenty of opportunities to achieve clinical skills and core procedures under direct consultant supervision.

Becoming familiar with resuscitation of variety of critical illnesses, injuries and exposure to variety of surgical procedures.

Providing appropriate fluids and pain relief and getting experience in the identification of and management of any complications.
