Main Duties of Placement

The placement rotates between the specialist ID ward (5C) and the ID/General Medical ward (5D) in QEUH, with trainees spending approximately two months based in each. There is a rotational commitment to acute medical receiving and hospital at night.

Typical Work Pattern

Full shift, including late and night shifts, with cover provided for emergency medical admissions.

Learning Opportunities

Excellent opportunities for learning and experience within the department on such topics as febrile returning travellers, symptomatic HIV, community acquired infection etc., in addition to opportunities to manage acute unselected medical admissions.

Teaching

Within the ID department there is a weekly journal club and a weekly ID X-ray meeting. There is also a joint consultant round once a week which also provides an opportunity for teaching.

Unique Selling Points

The opportunity to gain experience in Infection problems that are never or very rarely seen outside a specialist ID Unit e.g. HIV and febrile returning travellers.
