Placement Medical Microbiology

Main Duties of Placement

To help deliver a clinical diagnostic service to the clinical teams and GP practices served by the Department. This will involve an initial 6-week familiarisation placement in the laboratory learning bench techniques followed by clinical liaison, specialist ward rounds and MDT meetings for the remainder of the placement.

Typical Work Pattern

9am-5pm Monday-Friday.

No on-call.

Learning Opportunities

The trainee will be involved in

  • Laboratory bench techniques
  • Daily Clinical liaison
  • Specialist ward rounds i.e. ITU, spinal injuries, orthopaedics
  • Joint ID/Microbiology/Antimicrobial Pharmacist ward rounds
  • Weekly departmental clinical meetings
  • Quarterly Case-Based Discussion meetings
  • Monthly MDT with Infectious Diseases, TB Group
  • Twice monthly Departmental Journal club
  • Participation in audit
Teaching

Weekly one-to-one Consultant/Registrar teaching on relevant infection topics.

Monthly pan-Glasgow Consultant teaching of trainees.

Unique Selling Points

This represents an opportunity to become integrated within a Microbiology department giving advice on patient management with close daily contact with Consultants giving support and supervision. The nature of the work is varied, specialised and can be technically and clinically
challenging.
