| Main Duties of Placement | The trainee will become part of the liaison team consisting of nurses, psychologists and a Consultant. They will take part in regular multi-disciplinary team meetings, triage referrals and conduct psychiatric assessments; learning about the management of many different mental health conditions occurring in older people. The assessments are varied and take place across the acute hospital in general wards, acute receiving units and a specialised delirium/dementia ward lead by Geriatricians. The trainee will take part in the local on call psychiatric rota with on call duties at Gartnavel Royal Hospital and Old Age Psychiatry at Vale of Leven Hospital.
Supervision One hour of formal supervision will take place on a weekly basis with regular access to senior medical clinical supervision. |
| Typical Work Pattern | The trainee will be based with the Old Age liaison team during normal working hours (Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm) with the exception of attending teaching and shifts as duty doctor at Gartnavel Royal Hospital which will include evenings, nightshifts and weekends. |
| Learning Opportunities | The trainee will attend the FY2/GP teaching programme which will cover key topics in psychiatry. They will also attend internal teaching at Gartnavel Royal hospital with case/journal club presentations and there will be opportunities to present. Trainees also have the opportunity to attend weekly Balint group facilitated by a Consultant Psychotherapist. At this group they will have the opportunity to present and discuss cases to help develop their ability to reflect and understand the doctor-patient relationship. |
| Teaching | The trainee will be fully supported to attend/participate in the Foundation education programme. |
| Unique Selling Points | This post is an exciting opportunity to work in Liaison Psychiatry while also having opportunities to work within the associated Psychiatric. The trainee will gain confidence and learn new skills in liaison psychiatry that are applicable and valuable to many future career choices. In addition to this they will develop clinical skills through assessing patients with diverse backgrounds, ages and presentations whilst on call with senior support. The supervising Consultant completed a similar post while an FY2 and is aware how valuable such a post can be for developing an interest in Psychiatry. Additionally the supervising Consultant has an interest in research and there will be multiple opportunities to develop research skills. |
