Placement Forensic Psychiatry

Main Duties of Placement

Providing psychiatric input to medium secure forensic psychiatry service at Rowanbank clinic.

Joining multidisciplinary team members in assessing patients for medium security, working with MDT members in providing forensic opinions.

Working with forensic consultant psychiatrist in community forensic psychiatry clinics

Typical Work Pattern

Monday – Friday 9-5pm.

On call duties – 1 in 11 day time on call, 1 in 22 nights – on call is part of the general psychiatry rota at McKinnon House on the Stobhill hospital site.

Learning Opportunities
  1. Develop skills in assessment and formulation of mental and chronic physical illness, achieved by ongoing working with the MDT and consultant, through on call responsibilities to the wider mental health service and through shadowing and observation at community psychiatric clinics.
  2. Develop an understanding of comprehensive risk assessment and management of harm to others and to self via ongoing ward reviews, care program approach and risk management meetings.
  3. Develop skills in chronic disease management, both in terms of assessing and managing severe mental health problems but also with managing physical health problems – obesity, diabetes, cardiac issues are all significant challenges in forensic services.
  4. Opportunities to learn would be through team meetings, ward reviews  and through on call responsibilities.
  5. Develop understanding of capacity and mental health act legislation, through clinical supervision, shadowing consultant/higher trainees at mental health tribunals and court work.
  6. Enhance communication skills achieved in FY1 through direct patient interviews either in the ward, on call or during prison clinics as well as improving written skills with liaison with other care providers (e.g. high/low secure services) and summarising complex case information for risk assessment purposes.

Opportunities exist via the clinical supervisor’s involvement with SPSP and our research and audit program to get involved with audit and quality improvement programs under consultant supervision.

In addition to opportunities described above, all learning opportunities would be underpinned by ongoing formal assessments as required by the FY2 curriculum.
